From there, everything should work just like a real router would. You will be able to right click on the routers and select console. Once you are ready to start configuring the routers power them on with the green play button. You can connect them with the add link option, it is the ethernet cable icon. Now all you have to do is click the router icon on the left side and you will see your router and name (mine was c7200)!! Drag and drop a few into the work space.

Then hit next and you have successfully imported your Cisco IOS image! This essentially gave me 3 FastEthernet ports along with a GigabitEthernet port (that is actually a realistic layout). Slot 0 should auto fill, for this example I selected PA-FE-TX for slots 1 and 2, and PA-GE for slot 3. I would recommend filling in slots 0-3 on your router so you will will have 4 ports to use when you are finished.

I also left the next couple of screens at default, I found that it worked pretty seamlessly when I did. You will have the option to name the router if you would like, I am going to leave mine as the default to keep it simple. Select new, in the bottom middle and the browse to your Cisco IOS image. Then select IOS routers under the Dynamips drop down. Open GNS3, if you are using a MAC it will look like the picture below, if you are using a PC, I believe the preferences option will be under Edit drop down. We will then import this image into GNS3. I recommend using 7.bin.Īfter you have GNS3 installed on your computer, and you have downloaded a Cisco IOS image. I tried a few different ones before I found one that I felt worked well with GNS3.

After that you will have to download a Cisco IOS image. You will get one or two emails per month. I can tell you from personal experience they will not SPAM you. You will have to sign in or create an account before you can download their software. I went to a few different websites, but nothing seemed to be all in one place so I hope this post helps. It was not as intuitive to get up and running as Cisco’s packet tracer was. GNS3 is an excellent alternative or complementary tool to real labs for network engineers, administrators and people studying for certifications such as Cisco CCNA, CCNP andCCIE as well as Juniper JNCIA, JNCIS and JNCIE.As I am working towards my CCNP route test, it was recommended to me that I check out GNS3.

GNS3 is an open source (GNU GPL) software that simulates complex networks while being as close as possible from the way real networks perform, all of this without having dedicated network hardware such as routers and switches. If you face any problem setting it up with GNS3 drop me a message and I will get back to you asap. Old ones are kept intact for your reference.
